Yongnuo 50mm Prime Lens

August 25th 2018

Being on a budget i recently purchased a cheap F1.8 50mm prime lens with auto-focus from eBay to use with my Canon 600D for just over 50 bucks delivered.

It feels like a cheap lens being made mostly of plastic. I won't be using the auto-focus feature on this lens, night sky imaging is all about manual focus.  The focus ring has a short range and will need to be taped down once focused because it moves so easily but it seems to have decent glass once it's brought to focus. After having a play around briefly last night I can't complain for $50. If it isn't suitable i''ll probably bite the bullet and get the 50mm Canon and spend $150-200. time will tell.

It's hard to decide what to buy being a beginner on a budget to get good night sky images, the last few weeks have taught me that the stock Canon kit lenses just don't cut it. Luckily there is some really good info to trawl through on the astro forums.

Here is a link to a review of the Yongnou 50mm f1.8

On a brighter note, I'm eagerly awaiting the delivery of a new Samyang 14mm F2.8 lens. More on that when it arrives :)

P.S. After a couple of weeks use it really irks me how loose the focus ring is on this lens, it needs to be checked almost every couple of shots or if the camera position is changed. The glass produces good images.
